Volcanoes on the horizon

Posted 07.28.04 at 12:49 pm
Location: South of Adak Island

The fog lifted to reveal a dramatic horizon, including a snow-topped volcano—Great Sitikin Volcano, which looms from behind Kagalaska and Little Tanaga Islands. We’re also in sight of Adak Island, about 18 miles to our north. As science team members and crew wondered at the sudden view, biologist Bob Stone pointed out the peaks by name. At least three or four volcanoes are in view, some active. Jason II is down for its third dive; more journal entries coming soon.
