How do summer fires affect overwintering caribou?

The USGS Alaska Science Center's "Project of the Month" seems particularly timely: "Assessing wildland fire impacts on the winter habitat use and distribution of caribou within Alaska's interior boreal forest ecosystem."

The study is a 5-year look at the impact of wildfire on the Nelchina Caribou herd. Photos and a study plan posted on the site offer an in-depth look at researchers’ process and progress.
