Speaking of Alvin …
The deep-diving research sub was in Alaska Friday when the National Science Foundation announced Alvin's impending retirement.
The sub, operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, will be replaced in 2008 by a faster, deeper-diving sub. Read the NSF press release, or the WHOI site (which includes an Alvin slideshow and information on the planned new vehicle).
